McMurdo (Murtzs) Smith passed away in April this year at his home in Naples. He had been a resident of Naples for 47 years. He was born in 1948 in Dunipace, Scotland and moved to the United States when he was 10 years old and lived in the Chicago area.

He graduated from Westmar College in Le Mars, Iowa and relocated to begin his career in Naples in 1972.

LEARN MORE ABOUT VOLUNTEERING WITH THE CONSERVANCY

He worked for the City of Naples for several years and then moved to Collier County Parks & Recreation. While there he was instrumental in developing the county’s flagship Parks and Recreation program. He retired as the Beach & Water Manager for Collier County in 2013.

After his retirement, Murtz started volunteering at the Conservancy as a dock master. He was always soft spoken with a ready smile and became known for his customer service and organizational skills. When he was at the desk you could be assured that all things would go smoothly and any surprises that occurred would be handled appropriately. He was also a great leader and the newer dock masters thrived under his direction.

He is survived by his wife, Florine of 49 years; his son Kevin Smith of Chicago; his daughter Kristen Smith of Naples; and his grandson Kobe Griffen.

We thank Murtz for his role in protecting Southwest Florida’s unique natural environment and quality of life…now and forever.
